Our Wines
The spirit of the wine
The Denominación de Origen Calatayud has an ancient vinegrowing history, and the traditional Garnacha Tinta is still the principle grape variety, making up 60% of plantings, most with vines of over 40 years old and production of less than 2Kg per vine. This variety, of local origin, thrives in the distinctive soils and climate of Calatayud.
The Tempranillo, with around 20% of plantings, is the second most prominent variety. The remainder of vineyards are mainly planted with the white varieties Macabeo, Garnacha Blanca and Malvasia, and the red varieties Syrah, Mazuela, Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
With these “raw materials”, the major wines of Calatayud are as follows:

Vino Blanco
Made from the Macabeo variety. Pale yellow in colour, it is distinguished by its fresh, fruity character, preserved by leaving a touch of carbon dioxide in the wine after fermentation.

Vino Rosado
Made from the Garnacha Tinta grape variety, noted for its varietal character. The strawberry colour is lively and attractive, with floral rose aromas and a fruity nose. They are meaty wines, fresh and balanced, with a long finish.

Vino Tinto
Made principally with the Garnacha Tinta and Tempranillo varieties. The young wines have the colour of morello cherries, with tones of violet and are crystal clear. The intense aromas are reminiscent of blackberries and other black fruit. Recently, our range has expanded to include Syrah; a perfect foil for the Garnacha, Tempranillo; aged in oak as a single variety, and Garnacha Viñas Viejas, from vines of more than 40 years old. The oak aged red wines – Crianzas – have a cherry or ruby red colour. They are complex, combining ripe fruit, liquorice, vanilla, roasted coffee and cream with a good structure.
